Session #: 338-TU200
Presenter(s): Allison Rossett Session Length: 1 hr. 15 min. Event: 2008 ASTD International Conference & Expo Date: June 1-4, 2008
What is training? Think about it for a moment. What does it look like? Ask the person next to you on an airplane. What does training look like to that person? Most would conjure up a picture of a room, with an instructor up front, and employees seated around and about. If you or your airplane mate were coordinating, planning, or taking training, you think you know what to expect--but maybe you don't! Things are changing. Every recent ASTD State of the Industry report says so. Net. Net. This new world is characterized by a steady increase in technology-based delivery and a parallel decrease in time spent in classrooms with instructors and peers. The walls of the classroom are coming down. The instructor's reach must be greater, and deeper into the workplace. Her arms must grow longer, to assist where a task bogs down. His voice should project better, to where and when questions arise.
You have noticed it. Organizations are selling their training buildings and repurposing their training rooms. What of the people? What of the instructors? What of the students? What of the relationships and emotions? What of those special moments spent together in classrooms? Five years from now, will we say training and envision a Google search bar? How grim is that? Evaporation of the classroom? Perhaps. Preservation of the best of what classrooms and instructors provide? For sure and certain. Sounds good, but how would it work?
