Session #: 334-002
Presenter(s): Henry Mintzberg Session Length: 1hr. 15min. Event: 2004 ASTD Annual Convention Date: May 23-27, 2004
A manager cannot be created in a classroom. MBA programs that claim to do so leave a distorted impression of management. But people who are already managers can improve their practice in a classroom that respects and uses their experience. That will require a revolutionary shift in management development and especially management education, away from the first generation of lecturing and case discussions, which relies on other people?s experience, and the second generation of Action Learning and Work-Out, which creates experience. This third generation enables managers to learn from their own natural experience, through mutual reflection in a thoughtful classroom. In effect, this approach uses work rather than makes work. Its powerful impact has been shown in an acclaimed degree program for practicing managers that has been operating around the world for nine years. The presentation will be based on Henry Mintzberg?s new book, Managers not MBAs, which receives its first exposure at this conference.
