SESSION ABSTRACT: In the Industrial Age we believed that performance was optimized by creating hierarchical management networks. In the emerging knowledge age performance is optimized in dynamic self-organizing social networks. It is important for us clearly see the transformation we are in, and keep a strong focus on how value is being created. In this session we will discuss how performance is optimized through social collaboration as our natural social order. We will also discuss how social capital or the potential productivity of a social network is augmented or diminished depending on how we as managers perceive value is created. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Examine how social networks enable performance improvement--and conversly how authority diminishes performance. Develop social network maps. "Conserve" the social network and performance improvement.
