It's muggles, not magic that gets two million books a day out the door at Scholastic's warehouse. In the world of Harry Potter and Clifford the Big Red Dog, that means using innovative approaches to employee recruitment, retention, and development. This is particularly true in the case of front-line supervisors. With leaders retiring at a quicker rate, a low local unemployment rate, an increasing diverse community, and a unique corporate culture, Scholastic must "home grow" its leaders. To do this, they've constructed an internship program that addresses career paths, diversity implementation, and sigma lean project design. The program helped Scholastic reach a 75 percent management team promotion rate, which saved thousands of dollars in recruitment, retention, and training costs. This interactive session emphasizes ASTD competencies for driving results, planning and implementation, and other foundational issues, as well as sharing learning strategies for interns and steps for integrating the program into business goals. You will receive the internship overview, performance management tools, and mentoring workshop outline and have a hands-on opportunity to apply the program specifics to your own situation. Learning Objectives - Apply behavioral interview techniques to assess who can be trained as mentors. Develop employee skills to meet strategic challenges through an internal internship program. Align individual career planning and talent management with organizational strategies and demonstrated business acumen.
