Extensive research by the Center for Creative Leadership has established that job assignments are the number-one developer of effective leaders. Rotational assignments, in-place assignments, and longer-term developmental assignments are the strategy du jour in many organizations and governmental agencies. With significant time and money invested in developing the next generation of leaders, and with only days between assignment success and failure, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) did not leave success to chance by merely dropping" individuals into challenging new roles. Learn how VDOT partnered with IDSI to prepare potential executives to enter and succeed in assignment opportunities through a "dress rehearsal," a two-day simulation based on the research of John Gabarro (The Dynamics of Taking Charge) and Michael Watkins (The First 90 Days). You will learn how to increase assignment success by having executive candidates try out and practice strategies for entering, performing, learning, and exiting developmental assignments. The "dress rehearsal" provides scenarios framed by the VDOT work environment, culture, strategic direction, and relevant workforce issues. Within this richly defined context, executive candidates try out and adjust strategies to successfully accomplish their business and personal development objectives based on real time interaction and feedback."
