Session #: 337-TU207
Presenter(s): Eva Lo Session Length: 1:15 hr. Event: 2007 ASTD International Conference & Expo Date: June 3-6, 2007
Three philosophies, or belief systems, underlie such Asian societies as China, Japan, Korea, and Singapore. These philosophies--Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism--shape individual mindsets and behaviors, resulting in cultural differences between East and West. The speaker will focus on four major cultural dimensions: individualism, intro/extroversion, time orientation, and linear/integrated logic. You will learn how these four dimensions influence behaviors in business in Asia versus the West--in particular, during training sessions. You will learn how to design and deliver your training activities to accommodate Asian cultural characteristics, and to motivate your audience's engagement and learning. The purpose of this session is not to stereotype Asian" or "Western" behaviors, or to delineate certain training techniques as more suitable for one culture or another. Rather, the goal is to expand your training repertoire, so you are better equipped for diverse, international audiences. The speakers will cite successful examples and case studies from major organizations in the U.S., Canada, Hong Kong, and China."
